In honor of the Oncology Nursing Foundation’s 40th year supporting oncology nurses, we provide here a selection of resources to help you in developing healthy routines, learning stress management techniques, and practicing self-care. Developed for the Foundation’s 40 Ways to Wellness Celebration held in August 2021, we have assembled the resources here in one convenient location for your ongoing use.

Emotional Hazards of Nurses’ Work

Making time for yourself and practicing wellness can help to eliminate stress, improve health, reduce emotional exhaustion, and improve the quality of care. Stress in nurses is multifocal, pervasive, and persistent. They practice in a contemporary health care environment characterized by rapid change, the ongoing integration of novel technologies, and interpersonal challenges. Read more in this article by Deborah A. Wellness Wisdoms with Self-Care Expert, Deborah A. Boyle, MSN,RN, AOCNS®, FAAN

A former trustee of the Oncology Nursing Foundation, Debi is a long-tenured oncology clinical nurse specialist with an interest in recognizing and reducing the emotional consequences of nurses’ work and fostering their well-being. For the past decade, she has been a frequent lecturer nationally and internationally and has authored numerous publications on this topic. She co-authored the book Self-Healing Through Reflection: A Workbook for Nurses, which was awarded second place in the 2012 American Journal of Nursing book of the year. 

Resiliency Moments by The Clinic

Resiliency Moments were specially created for you by nurse, dancer, and creative caregiver, Tara Rynders RN-BC, MFA, BSN, BA, founder of The Clinic. 

Tara is a registered nurse of sixteen years and received her MFA in Dance in 2011 from The University of Colorado at Boulder. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish, and a Masters's in Fine Arts in Dance with a specialization in Movement and Somatic Practices.  Tara is also an Advanced Certified Grief Recovery Specialist. 

The Clinic, an arts and play-based company that provides workshops, performance, and research around burnout and secondary traumatic stress.

Tara was awarded the Oncology Nursing Foundation's 2021 Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship, which she presented at the 2021 ONS Congress. Rynders embraces collective vulnerability, grief, and self-compassion as a means to end burnout. She harnesses her passion for nursing and the arts to collectively honor our shared humanity by creating a culture of caregiving nested in self-compassion, curiosity, creativity, and joy. Her presentation is an immersive invitation to care for oneself through truth-telling, self-compassion, creative expression, and ultimately the freedom to celebrate pleasure.

Breathing for Resiliency Guided by Joni Marra, Esq, CH

After receiving certifications in Clinical Hypnotherapy and Breath Therapy, Joni started Inward Bound based in Northeast Ohio. She is also a hospice volunteer and a certified End-of-Life Doula. She completed training in these areas from the Cleveland Clinic, Integrative Concepts, LLC, International Doulagivers Institute.  She serves on the boards of The Institute for Research on Unlimited Love, and The Hope Foundation, which funds clinical trials that seek to cure cancer.

Yoga for Relaxation

Four calming yoga offerings have been created for you in collaboration with River’s Edge Spirituality and Wellness Center in Cleveland, OH. Each class is between 45-60 minutes long, provides a focus on relaxation, and offers modifications to suit different levels of practice. Grab a yoga mat or blanket, or a chair and pillow as may be needed in some of the sessions.  Participants are encouraged to avoid eating prior to each session.
