Excellence in Oncology Nursing Volunteerism Award

Purpose: The Excellence in Oncology Nursing Volunteerism Award recognizes outstanding oncology nurse volunteers who have made sustained and meaningful contributions and inspired others to follow in their footsteps. By honoring these dedicated nurses, we promote volunteerism and foster a community of support and excellence in oncology nursing.
Award: The recipient will receive a $500 cash prize and travel reimbursement to attend the annual ONS Congress®.
The recipient will receive travel reimbursement to attend the annual ONS Congress. ONS will reimburse the award recipient for round-trip economy airfare to and from the recipient's home address to the ONS Congress location, provided the recipient makes all travel arrangements through ONS's travel agency. Additionally, one night's lodging will be permitted, provided that the recipient makes the hotel arrangements through the ONS national conferences and meetings department. Meals for a 24-hour period, certain ground transportation situations, and parking will be reimbursed within limitations.

Eligibility Criteria:
The award will be based on the following criteria, which will be validated to ensure accuracy and alignment with the award criteria prior to entering the selection process.
An eligible nominee:
Has been actively engaged in volunteering nationally in any or all of the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), Oncology Nursing Foundation (ONF), or Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) for at least three years immediately preceding the nomination
Has shown consistent and exceptional volunteer service to ONS, ONF, or ONCC at the national or local level, including serving in leadership positions and mentoring others
Has contributed completely on a volunteer basis, without pay (Expense reimbursement is allowed.)
The scoring criteria for judging this nomination packet is as follows:
Demonstrates consistent and significant involvement in volunteer activities in one or more of the enterprise corporations
Is reliable and honors commitments to the volunteer activities
Works collaboratively and respectfully with other volunteers and staff
Promotes volunteerism with the organizations as a positive experience and professional development opportunity
Mentors less experienced volunteers and inspires others to become involved
Exhibits high standards of professional integrity, responsibility, and ethics
Makes significant contributions in advancing the organization’s mission and goals
Displays leadership, formally or informally, and guides others in meeting expectations of the volunteer role
Exclusions:
- This award is not eligible for self-nomination.
Points to Consider:
- Do not wait until the last day to start an application, as a quality and competitive application will take time to complete.
- We suggest that you use your time wisely by getting a head start and collecting any additional required items, such as the name and email address of someone writing your letter of recommendation, before you begin.
- Your essay responses should be of good quality, in terms of grammar, punctuation, syntax, conciseness, and ability to answer the question. Ensure you submit a detailed response and use the word count to your advantage.
- To strengthen your application, use free online tools such as Grammarly and have someone read over your application to ensure accurate spelling, punctuation, and grammar.

Nominee’s personal statement describing why they chose to become a volunteer and how they have contributed to advancing the goals of ONS, ONF, and/or ONCC through volunteerism (maximum of 500 words)
Two letters of support (not to exceed two pages per letter)
Deadline
The deadline for submission of nominations is September 30, 2025, at 5:00 pm Eastern Time (ET).
ONS uses an external, vendor-supported online program for all award nomination applications. The application system is set up so that at exactly 5:00 pm ET , September 30, the application site will automatically shut down and be locked. Any applications that are open (not completed) at this time will be terminated and will not be accepted. It is imperative that all open applications be submitted prior to 5:00 pm ET, September 30, in order to be accepted into the online system and be eligible for consideration. In order to be fair to all who may nominate individuals for consideration for an ONS award, the September 30, 5:00 pm ET deadline cannot be extended without prior authorization from the ONS Board of Directors. Selection
A selection committee will conduct a blind review of all nominations and select the award recipient based on the established criteria. All decisions of the selection committee are final.
