Meet Ryan Iwamoto: Leading with Vision as ONF Board President

As the Oncology Nursing Society celebrates its 50th anniversary, it’s a fitting moment to spotlight Ryan Iwamoto, newly appointed President of the Oncology Nursing Foundation (ONF) Board of Directors. With a career rooted in patient-centered care and a lifelong passion for advancing the profession, Ryan brings both heart and perspective to this leadership role.
“ONS has really been my professional home,” Ryan said. “I’ve cherished the many colleagues and lifelong friends I’ve made here—people who have supported me throughout my career.”
From Inspiration to Impact: Ryan’s Journey into Oncology Nursing
His path into oncology nursing began in nursing school, during a multidisciplinary care project funded by the National Institutes of Health. That early experience opened his eyes to the complexity and humanity of cancer care and ignited a passion that led him to pursue a master’s degree in oncology nursing and a decades-long career of leadership and advocacy.
Now, as ONF Board President, Ryan is focused on the future: how we can support and equip oncology nurses to lead, thrive, and advance quality cancer care across the profession. He speaks often about two core values that guide his tenure—community and paying it forward—emphasizing that progress is only possible when we invest in one another.
Inspiring Collective Action
As ONF moves forward, Ryan encourages every nurse, donor, and partner to reflect on what they can contribute—whether it’s time, expertise, or philanthropy. He reminds us that support can look different for everyone, and that every effort, no matter the size, plays a role in shaping what comes next.
“Consider making a gift to the Foundation in an amount that’s meaningful to you—every contribution helps an oncology nurse take the next step toward achieving their dreams,” he said. “When we each contribute to the Foundation, we build the future of oncology nursing—together.”
