Oncology Nursing Foundation Awards $526,000 in Funding for Oncology Nursing Students

(August 22, 2023) PITTSBURGH, PA  - The Oncology Nursing Foundation awarded 88 academic scholarships this year to aspiring oncology nursing students across the United States. In total, $526,000 was allocated from the Foundation’s endowment and special funds to support the 2023–2024 academic scholarship program. Scholarships support the education of oncology nursing students pursuing bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees, and awards range from $3,000 to $7,500.

“Donor contributions to the Oncology Nursing Foundation play a critical role in the advancement of the oncology profession and further the mission to support cancer nursing excellence,” Angie Stengel, MS, CAE, executive director of the Oncology Nursing Foundation, said. “This investment ultimately touches the lives of many, including patients and their families, through the caring and expert practice of oncology nurses.” The 2023–2024 academic scholarships were made possible thanks to our donors, the Foundation’s Ann Olson Memorial Scholarship Fund, Mary Scherbring Fund, Ohio Practice Alliance Fund, Dallas ONS Chapter, Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, and other longtime contributors to the Oncology Nursing Foundation.

All scholarship recipients this year are advancing their education while continuing to work as oncology nurses.

“The academic scholarship from the Oncology Nursing Foundation has made a significant impact on my life. It enabled me to pursue my academic and professional goals without the added financial burden that comes with education,” scholarship recipient John Bourgeois, MMHC, BSN, RN, OCN®, CCRP, NEA-BC, said. “As a result, I have been able to focus on making a positive difference in the lives of oncology patients and educating new nurses. I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and will continue to work diligently to make a meaningful impact in the field of oncology nursing.”

The Oncology Nursing Society created the Oncology Nursing Foundation in 1981 to accept charitable contributions to advance these important activities on behalf of oncology nursing. The mission of the Oncology Nursing Foundation is to support oncology nursing excellence. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and institutions, the Oncology Nursing Foundation has awarded more than $31 million in funding since its inception for oncology nursing education, research, and leadership development, giving nurses the opportunity to pursue excellence in delivering care to patients with cancer.
