A New Initiative Takes Shape for Oncology Nurse Well-Being

The Oncology Nursing Foundation (ONF), in partnership with the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), is proud to announce a new oncology nurse well-being initiative designed to support all oncology nurses across practice settings and the diverse communities they serve.

Cindi Cantril, OCN®-Emeritus, ONS founding board member, a highly respected oncology nurse and educator with more than 52 years of experience in resilience training and nurse well-being, established the Cynthia Cantril Oncology Nurses Resilience Fund, laying the foundation for this initiative and inspiring support from additional corporate partners. Together, these contributions reflect a shared belief that supporting nurses’ well-being is essential to sustaining the oncology nursing workforce and strengthening cancer care nationwide. Cindi shares:

“More than 50 years ago, ONS was founded to be the professional home for oncology nurses—a place to define the specialty, elevate practice and science, and support those drawn to this deeply meaningful work. Today, more than ever, supporting the legacy of oncology nursing must be at the forefront of our mission,” Cantril said.

“Resilience is not a buzzword—it is a responsibility that requires an intentional investment in our well-being, calling, and legacy. Through initiatives supported by this fund, we are identifying healing strategies—including immersive retreats and restorative resources—that will safeguard our specialty. A focus on our resilience and long-term sustainability will ensure oncology nursing remains strong.”

Leading With Purpose and Partnership

Oncology nursing is deeply meaningful and uniquely demanding. As the professional home and philanthropic partner for oncology nurses, ONS and ONF are committed to leading with intention, investing in solutions that reflect the real-world needs of nurses across care settings, geography, and career stages.

This initiative builds on that commitment, centering well-being as a critical pillar of professional sustainability. It highlights the fact that supporting nurses ultimately strengthens care for patients, families, and communities.

What to Expect

A cross-functional project team has been assembled and is actively shaping the vision and framework for this initiative. Additional details, resources, and engagement opportunities will be shared throughout 2026.

We are grateful to the donors and partners who are helping make this work possible. Together, ONF and ONS will continue to lead and invest in what oncology nurses need to thrive—today and into the future.
