How the AACR/ONF Scholars Program Expands Nursing Impact

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), Oncology Nursing Foundation (ONF), and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) recognize the integral role oncology nurses play in advancing clinical research and cancer care. To support nurses’ professional growth, the AACR/ONF Oncology Nurse Scholars Program connected participants with leading cancer research while creating opportunities for direct engagement with clinicians and research leaders across disciplines.  

Nurse scholars chosen for the program received funding to attend the AACR Annual Meeting, participate in focused sessions and activities, and engage in mentorship and networking that bridges research and clinical practice. The initiative is designed to help oncology nurses translate emerging scientific knowledge into direct patient care while supporting mentorship, progressional development, and cross-disciplinary engagement.  

“Receiving the AACR/ONF Oncology Nurse Program Scholarship is an honor and a meaningful affirmation of my work and future goals in oncology nursing. This scholarship directly influences my career by enhancing my ability to conduct impactful research, expand my training in cancer epidemiology and translational science, and collaborate with leaders in oncology through the AACR. It supports my long-term goal of linking clinical care and research to tackle disparities in underserved and rural communities,” recipient Amy Ballou, DNP, MSN, ACNP-BC, PhD candidate, said. “Ultimately, this support accelerates my growth as a nurse scientist dedicated to improving cancer outcomes.
