5 Ways to Strengthen Your ONS Congress® Scholarship Application

Every year, the Oncology Nursing Foundation (ONF) awards scholarships that make it possible for oncology nurses and nursing students to attend the 51st annual ONS Congress®: The largest, most comprehensive conference dedicated to oncology nursing. These scholarships cover registration, travel, and daily expenses, removing barriers so you can learn from experts, connect with peers, and grow in your career.
For many recipients, the experience is not only educational, but also transformative. As 2025 scholarship recipient Analene Bumbury, DNP, FNP-BC, RN shared:
“Receiving an ONS Congress Scholarship through the Oncology Nursing Foundation provided me with an opportunity to enhance my knowledge of challenges in the world of oncology across the nation.”
If you’re planning to apply for a scholarship and join us from May 13-17, 2026, in San Antonio, TX, here are five ways to make your application stand out:
1. Highlight Your Passion for Oncology Nursing
Your application is your opportunity to show what fuels your commitment to oncology nursing. Be specific about what drives you. Whether it’s supporting patients through treatment, mentoring colleagues, or advancing research, passion is one of the most compelling parts of any application.
2. Connect ONS Congress to Your Career Goals
Scholarship reviewers want to see how attending ONS Congress will benefit your professional journey. Explain how the sessions, networking, or new knowledge will directly impact your current role and long-term career aspirations.
3. Share the Impact Beyond Yourself
Think about how you’ll bring what you learn back to your patients, team, or institution. Will you share new evidence-based practices, present a debrief to colleagues, or mentor students? Showing ripple effects makes your application stronger.
One past attendee, Mandy Colman, BSN, OCN®, RN an Oncology Infusion & Radiation Manager, reflected on the far-reaching benefits:
“I ran into nurses I haven’t worked with in years, heard some amazing speakers both educational and inspirational, learned some tricks to help improve the operations of our infusion center, and found a really cool tool that will help my infusion RNs.”
4. Proofread and Be Clear
Clarity matters. Take time to proofread your application for spelling, grammar, and flow. Ask a mentor or colleague to review it before you submit. A polished application shows professionalism and care.
5. Apply Early and Follow Guidelines
Don’t wait until the last minute. Review eligibility criteria, gather materials, and submit your application early. Follow the directions and pay attention to word counts and required documents. All applications need a letter of recommendation and a professional, membership, and volunteer experience list. Applications close December 1, 2025.
