Oncology Nursing Foundation Lectureship to Address the Care of Older Adults With Cancer
(March 15, 2022) PITTSBURGH - The Oncology Nursing Foundation has chosen Peggy Burhenn, MS, CNS, RN-BC, AOCNS®, clinical practice education specialist at City of Hope, one of the largest cancer research and treatment organizations in the United States, as the 2022 Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial lecturer. Burhenn will share a presentation titled Finding a Place in Your Heart for Older Adults with Cancer at the ONS Congress° on Friday, April 29, at 8:15 am PST in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena.
“I was so delighted to be chosen for the Mara Mogensen Flaherty lectureship award this year. My work has been devoted to older adults with cancer, and this award signifies that the oncology community recognizes the importance of this vulnerable population,” said Burhenn. “To have this award recognize a focus in gero-oncology highlights the advances that are being made by not only me but by many of my colleagues as well, in supporting older adults with cancer.”
The Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship established almost 40 years ago, supports an annual award lecture on a topic related to the psychosocial aspects of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care and is presented by an individual involved in the fields of psychosocial oncology, cancer care, education, or research.
“Mara Mogensen Flaherty was an inspiring young woman with compassion and a desire to help others. She gave tirelessly, supporting patients with cancer through education and survivorship advocacy,” said Oncology Nursing Foundation President Tracy Gosselin, PhD, RN, AOCN®, NEA-BC, FAAN. “In the spirit of this award in her honor, the Foundation is delighted to recognize Peggy’s contributions and excellence in caring for the multifaceted needs of older adults with cancer.”
The Oncology Nursing Foundation was created by the Oncology Nursing Society in 1981 to accept charitable contributions to advance important activities like this lectureship on behalf of oncology nursing. The mission of the Oncology Nursing Foundation is to support oncology nursing excellence. Thanks to the generosity of individuals and institutions, the Oncology Nursing Foundation has awarded more than $30 million in funding since its inception for education, research, and leadership development for oncology nurses to give them the opportunity to pursue excellence in delivering care to patients with cancer.
